new aau strategy

THE PROCESS OF REACHING THE NEW AAU STRATEGY 2016-2021

Aalborg University’s new strategy, "Knowledge for the world", was approved by the University Board in October 2015. The strategy process was divided into four phases, and throughout the process staff, students and other resource personnel were involved.

In September 2015, the Executive Management appointed five action plan groups; these were given the task of translating the overall initiatives outlined in the strategy into concrete action plans which are to support the implementation of the strategy. The Executive Management requested for this process to be propelled by and deeply rooted in the overall management system. The action plan groups include members from across the University and are all headed by members of the Executive Management.

Main strategic direction

AAU's strategic vision for 2016-21:

  • We act and are recognised as a university with a distinct profile and well-documented quality in all of our activities

  • We are internationally recognised for excellence in research with a problem and solution oriented perspective

  • We educate students for the society of the future

  • We implement our basic principles of problem and project based learning, and the University is internationally  acclaimed for the documented results of this learning method

  • We are an attractive collaboration partner for private companies and public authorities and institutions, and our carefully selected knowledge-sharing partnerships are based on mutuality and a shared focus

The process towards the new strategy (phase 2)

During 2014 AAU’s board of directors and executive management prepared the framework and direction of the strategy process, and the overall plan was approved by the Board at their meeting on 27 October.
Work towards a new strategy is based on two essential elements:

  • The principles of problem based project work
  • A high degree of involvement of staff, students and other resource personnel

The executive board has set up five interdisciplinary project teams, which will shed light on the four key action areas:

  • Research with a difference (divided into: Themes and landmarks and Innovation and knowledge sharing)
  • PBL – the next generation
  • Education with a difference
  • One AAU – the AAU DNA

On the basis of input from staff, students and external stakeholders, the project teams will offer their visions and ideas as regards the development of their particular strategic areas of action.

On the basis of the proposals received from the project teams, the executive management will formulate the new strategy, which is due to be completed by the summer of 2015.

Project teams

The project teams have been appointed for the period November 2014 to March 2015

Each of the five project teams is composed of an executive manager and 5 to 7 members of staff representing all main areas. Project participants were appointed by the Executive Board on the basis of their expertise and experience and not as representatives of their areas.

The task of the project teams will be to collect inspiration and input from both internal and external stakeholders of the organisation. They will also initiate analyses and propose visions and idea catalogues for the development of their strategic focus areas.

Consultation/preparing implementation (phase 4)

The action plan groups have been appointed for the period September to November 2015

The executive management requests that the effort of translating the strategy into actual action and implementation plans is powered by and deeply rooted in the overall management system. Furthermore, all managers must be familiar with and understand their own roles in the implementation of the strategy, and should be able to communicate with and involve their own organisational units in this process.

The executive board has set up five interdisciplinary action plan groups. The task of the action plan groups is to translate the overall actions outlined in the strategy into concrete action plans which will support the implementation of the strategy in the organisation. To guide the work of the groups, terms of reference will be prepared, and a project secretary will be assigned to each of the five action plan groups.  The groups must submit their action plan proposals Tuesday 10 November 2015, and all action plans must be approved by the executive management.

Strategy process in Danish

Some have asked why we chose only to conduct the process towards the new strategy in Danish.

AAU is a national university with an international profile and Danish is our common language. Therefore, we found it only natural to conduct the process in Danish while providing those who do not speak Danish with the opportunity to contribute to the process by submitting their input and ideas in English.
